The Demise of My Health
Chapter eight of "Chronically Alive: A Story of Sick.
Becca's health is on a steady decline. She develops a pounding heartbeat, shortness of breath, fluttering in her throat, and blue fingertips. This time she immediately recognizes the symptoms as SVT and doesn't try to get anyone else to call 911 for her. Instead, she calls 911 on herself.
The SVT is followed by hypovolemic shock where Becca's blood pressure drops so low and her heart rate jumps so high that there's not enough blood to circulate through her body. Her skin turns bluish-gray and clammy and she passes out. An ambulance must rush her to to the hospital and pump her full of IV fluids. She wakes up in the pediatric ICU.
As if all that weren't enough it's followed by a drop in blood levels of necessary electrolytes, protein, iron and a whole bunch of other essential body elements. Dr. Kaye calls her up and tells her to head straight to the hospital with her mother and to let her mother hold her hand and support her on the way out to the car because she will be dizzy and unsteady.
On the way to the hospital her mother tells her that if she would just eat like a normal person and get rid of the awful feeding tube in her nose she wouldn't have all these problems. Her mom lets her know that both her and her dad are searching for an inpatient eating disorder unit that will take her.
Becca is feeling so sick she can't even respond, she just has a burning pit developing in her stomach.
When her health goes south in a completely different direction at age 18, Dr. Kaye directs her to an adult kidney doctor, Dr. Green, but will her mom sabatoge her chances with this new doctor?
