Cassie can't put her finger on what point in her life she went from being normal to being crazy, but she is very aware that the experiences she goes through are what most people would consider insane. At first, she thinks her hallucinations are just her normal imaginary friends. Then Fellingham and the Narrator come along who are frightening and nasty, but Perra is soothing and speaks in lullaby tones and comes when Cassie is in pain. Soon Cassie realizes that she can invite Perra by inflicting pain on herself. She knows this behavior is far from normal.
